Gangtok: The newly formed SKM Government has been rigorously working on creating digital environment in Sikkim through various initiatives. One such initiative is from the State Power Minister Shri M N Sherpa who has decided to install the power meter or a prepaid electricity meters in a phased wise in various localities in and around Gangtok. This initiative was earlier started in 2019 after the SKM Government took in power after it victory of the General election 2019. Though the scheme was started in 2019 but we can see the change that is happening only after two years of planning and implementation on 2022. This was done in view of the Central Government’s Integrated Power Development Scheme. The power Minister stated that they are planning to implement this is all the major cities of Sikkim. Total of 36,940 single phase meters which would be supporting 10kW load has been distributed so far to the applicable areas. Also 3,011 three phase meters supporting the higher load of 45kW has been distributed mainly to the business entities.

Gangtok, Singtam, Namchi, Gyalshing, Rangpo, Mangan and Jorethang are some of the main cities where these power meters will be installed in the first phase.
The Rural areas will also be covered very soon as stated by the minister. This will help us to save energy and provide easy access to billing system for the end users. Also Prepaid vouchers will be made available on “Sahaj Liberty App” or through the State Bank of Sikkim. The recharge voucher will be in the range of Rs. 200 to Rs 30,000 as per the convenience.
Under the stringent leadership of Chief Minister of Sikkim this policy to implement the power meter has been adopted and made operational so that the development of the state could not be just a development process but a much needed sustainable one.
